About the Residence

The "In Process" Artistic Residency is a program dedicated to experimentation, exchange, and creative development. Inspired by the thought of Charles Peirce, it values the process as a space for inquiry, doubt, and discovery. Here, the journey matters as much as the outcome. In each edition, artists from diverse backgrounds share their research, develop works, and connect with the public through mentorships, gatherings, live broadcasts, roundtables, and exhibitions.

  • The Artist Residency – In Process is a space dedicated to experimentation and the development of the creative process, inspired by the pragmatist philosophy of Charles Peirce. We follow the principle of “not blocking the way of inquiry,” fostering an environment where artists can explore, make mistakes, and start over—free from the pressure of external expectations. Here, creativity unfolds through dialogue and interaction.

The residency challenges the logic of immediate productivity and expands the possibilities of creation. The focus is on the process itself, on strengthening identities, and on building a space where different perspectives intersect.

  • The residency proposes a methodology of its own, combining Peircean semiotics, collaborative practices of critical mediation, and tools from gamification. It is not a linear sequence of steps, but a field of lived experiences that invites both artists and the public to inhabit the creative process in real time.

Inspired by Charles Peirce’s categories — Firstness, Secondness, and Thirdness — the methodology unfolds in three phases, each activating a different relationship with desire, the world, and language:

🜂 Firstness – Awaken the desire
Exploration of creative intentions. Artists start from their own experiences and social identities to name the impulses that move their processes.

🜁 Secondness – Make it real
A confrontation with the world’s limits. Ideas are tested in real materials, contexts, and resistances — requiring listening, adaptation, and persistence.

🜄 Thirdness – Connect the dots
Refining the path. Discoveries are organized and made public. The final exhibition and conversation circle are not outcomes — they are part of the process itself.

This structure comes to life through the residency’s practices: weekly hands-on sessions, individual mentorships, public conversation circles, guided school visits, gamified dynamics, and meetings among artists, curators, and educators. The final exhibition is not just a display — it is a gesture of sharing and of tensioning what was lived.

All of this is held by a team committed to listening, accessibility, and presence. Here, artistic making is not treated as individual performance, but as collective elaboration.

The question that guides the methodology is not “how to reach the result,” but: what changes when the one who creates allows themselves to be affected by the process?

  • The methodology permeates a variety of structured activities designed to enrich the artists' creative process:

Practical Sessions Meetings where artists move from idea to the finalization of their works, while the public follows the process live, experiencing the challenges and discoveries of artistic creation.

Discussion Circles – Collective gatherings for exchanging experiences among artists, mentors, and the community, fostering dialogue around experimentation and the challenges of creation.

Mentorship – Throughout the residency, artists receive personalized guidance, with support, exchange, and direction for the development of their creative investigations.

Ongoing Support – Each artist is accompanied by a team that includes a conceptual mentor, on-site tutor, multimedia technician, and professionals in audiovisual, communication, and accessibility. Together, they provide attentive listening, critical provocation, technical support, high-quality documentation, and visibility for the process.

Gamified Dynamics – Symbolic missions, interactive paths, and collective challenges are used as tools for creation and mediation, activating desire, listening, and public engagement throughout the process.

Process Documentation – Creation of artist logbooks, recording reflections, experiments, and learnings throughout the residency.

In-Person and Online Exhibition – Presentation of the artworks developed during the residency, encouraging dialogue between artists and the public.

Guided Visits and Workshops – Educational activities in schools that promote dialogue, experimentation, and reflection on creative processes in art.

Lectures – Exploration of collective creative processes through the lens of Charles Peirce, highlighting doubt, experimentation, fallibility, and collective construction as driving forces in artistic creation.

  • Founded in 2022 in Guarapuava, the Artist Residency – In Process has become a space for experimentation and creation. Since its first edition, it has grown in both reach and impact, expanding from 20 artists in 2022 to 48 in 2023.

Starting with its 3rd edition in 2024, the residency adopted a hybrid format, combining in-person and online activities. It established partnerships with UNICENTRO and the Guarapuava Department of Culture, promoting exhibitions, guided visits, and discussion circles.

In 2025, the program was officially recognized as a Ponto de Cultura through the National Policy for Living Culture (Política Nacional de Cultura Viva), and joined the Res Artis – Worldwide Network of Arts Residencies. Its 5th edition was selected 6th out of 1,130 projects in the State Multi-Arts Funding Call (score: 99/100 – SEEC/PR), and 8th place in the Cultura Viva state call (score: 97/100 – PNAB/SEEC/PR). These recognitions confirm the strength of its methodology, its territorial relevance, and its legitimacy as a cultural initiative.

Since its creation in 2022, the residency has accompanied over 100 creative processes, directly engaged more than 2,100 people through public conversations and guided visits, and welcomed over 1,000 visitors to its exhibitions. These numbers highlight its capacity to activate living cultural networks, support the formation of artists, and engage diverse audiences.

5th Edition of the Artistic Residency

The 5th edition of the Artistic Residency – Creative Connections: Innovation and Identities is dedicated to artists who wish to create from the tensions between identity, resistance, and belonging. More than representation, this edition calls for full presence — an invitation for artists who do not fit into labels and seek to expand their practices through dialogue with other voices and trajectories.

The program is primarily intended for artists who identify as women, LGBTQIA+, Black, Indigenous, or Quilombola. Here, art is understood as an act of resistance — a way of asserting oneself in the world and building meaning collectively.

Over the course of four months, 10 artists will be accompanied by a team of mentors, tutors, communication professionals, accessibility support, and audiovisual documentation. The journey includes in-person meetings, public conversation circles, one-on-one mentorships, school workshops, guided visits, public interaction, and a final exhibition in both physical and digital formats.

The Em Processo Artistic Residency is supported by the Department of Arts at the State University of Central-West (UNICENTRO), the Municipal Department of Culture of Guarapuava, and the State Secretariat of Culture of Paraná. It is made possible through funding from the Aldir Blanc National Policy for Cultural Promotion – Ministry of Culture – Federal Government of Brazil.

  • Over the course of four months, ten artists will take part in an artistic journey where they will explore new creative possibilities, engage in dialogue with fellow artists, and develop a work to be presented to the public in a final exhibition.
It is a collective and immersive process that combines in-person meetings, online exchanges, personalized mentorships, and moments of dialogue and experimentation.

    • A safe and welcoming space for your creative process.

    • Basic materials and infrastructure to support the development of your work.

    • Technical and artistic support, with a team of professionals available to guide you.

    • Visibility for your work, with wide dissemination across social media and cultural platforms.

Agenda

The residency fosters reflections that encourage us and help us understand that there is no single formula—that our doubts and questions are shared by many fellow artists. Sharing these experiences strengthens and motivates us to keep going. For me, it has been especially enriching, encouraging, and deeply important for my growth as an artist.

Patricia Giloni

Artist and Professor at Unicentro

I’ll get personal here: I love Desirée’s sensitivity in leading the sessions—there’s something of the philosophy of difference in her approach—the warmth in her words, the joy of being with us even from afar. I feel genuinely welcomed. In our one-on-one conversation, Desirée was attentive to my proposal and offered solutions I hadn’t considered. We all felt truly embraced.

Rafael Olze

Artist and Professor at Unicentro

Having a set time and space to create—while seeing others in their own processes—greatly supports creative discipline. My creative energy fluctuates over time, from intense dives to moments of paralysis. But there, the residency becomes a space for thinking and reflection, which really helps during those stagnant phases. The team fosters a strong sense of belonging within the group and supports the organization of time, space, activities, and the technical aspects of each project.

Érica Dias Gomes

Word Artist and Professor at Unicentro

The artist residency provided a stimulating environment for the development of my creative process. Mentorship was crucial in helping me explore new approaches and techniques, and the feedback I received helped refine my ideas. The available support and resources were essential in enriching my practice. I also highlight the importance of creating collectively and how the intertwining of different projects made the experience even more meaningful.

Jojo Souza Santos

Artist and Researcher of

Performing, Sound and Writing Arts

For me, the residency is both a commitment and a leap of faith. It requires surrender to truly create, and the leap to envision something bigger with the goal of presenting it to an audience—while staying consistent in the creative flow and enjoying the exchanges with others in the process. Desirée’s mediation inspires both individual and collective movements, nurturing new ways of making, being, and seeing oneself as an artist. Personally, I love the experience.

Maria Eduarda Roberti

Artist and Psychologist

It was only within the group that I could truly recognize aspects of my creative process—my rhythm, peculiarities, challenges, and strengths. Through Desirée’s mediation, I came to understand art as both process and work: while desire gives it rhythm and direction, the artist’s effort and organization are what bring the work to life. This helped demystify the idea of art as an innate gift. Participating in the residency was crucial for my development, motivating and empowering me to pursue what I believe in and long to create.

Bruna Cybulskii

Artista

The artist residency was a turning point in my creative journey, providing not only technical development but also an artistic maturity that I will undoubtedly carry into my future career. The collaborative environment of the residency pushed me to seek new challenges and to venture into more experimental projects, which expanded both my skills and visual repertoire. The mediation was essential in this process, offering steady and encouraging guidance.

Helena de Júlio

Photographer

The Residency offers me multiple creative sparks that lead to personal discoveries and also help me gain a clearer understanding of the artistic context I’m part of. It’s fascinating to see how everyone’s process takes shape — sometimes as a direct continuation of the initial idea, and at other times as its complete opposite. The attachment and detachment from an idea, the sense of self as an artist, and how we see and feel ourselves when being observed while creating — the Residency provides me with a new lens through which to create and share.

Captura de Tela 2025-03-21 às 11.32.58.png

John Taborda

Artist

“Collapse” is the word that defines my process: I build walls of certainty, and my own art tears them down, leaving me groundless. With each new beginning, there is uncertainty — of success or failure — but I embrace this instability as part of the creative path. With every Residency meeting, through provocations, reflections, and pulsing desires, I am transformed in duality — I feel rage, but it always leads to a transformative ecstasy.
